Talking Points: Rays 7, Red Sox 5

Share

STAR OF THE GAME: Tampa Bay bullpen

After the Rays tied the game with five runs in the sixth, three Rays relievers combined to limit the Red Sox to just one hit over the final three innings.

HONORABLE MENTION: Brandon Guyer

Guyer got an 0-for-2 pitch from Craig Breslow and drilled in on a line to right, scoring two runs in the fifth and tying the game up for the Rays.

GOAT OF THE GAME: Joe Kelly

Kelly was tremendous for the first five innings, allowing just a run on three hits with seven strikeouts. He also had a manageable pitch count. But then he fell through some sort of trap door in the sixth, failing to retire any of the first five hitters he faced and was done before the first out of the inning was recorded.

TURNING POINT: The sixth inning sinkhole that saw the Sox go from a 5-1 lead to a tie game, 5-5.

BY THE NUMBERS: Xander Bogaerts was 0-for-4 and has just two hits in his last 22 at-bats.
