Sox officially sign Ross, designate Atchison for assignment

The official arrival of Cody Ross means the departure of Scott Atchison . . . at least for now.
The Red Sox announced the signing of Ross -- with whom they'd reached contract agreement last week -- on Wednesday afternoon. To make room on the 40-player roster for the free agent outfielder, the Sox designated right-handed reliever Scott Atchison for assignment.
Atchison most of the year on the BostonPawtucket shuffle, going back and forth from the big leagues to Triple-A six times. He made 17 appearances during his six stints with the Sox, going 1-0 with 1 save and a 3.26 ERA.
The Sox can still re-sign Atchison to a minor-league deal with an invitation to spring training
