Sox notes: Aviles returns, Bailey progresses

BOSTON -- Shortstop Mike Aviles returns to the Red Sox lineup after missing the last five games with turf toe. He's playing shortstop and hitting ninth.

Valentine said that Aviles is "hungry to get back in there."

"Aviles is back in the lineup, and his toe feels 100 percent," said Valentine. "He had an injection, and as soon as the injection settled in, he got really good. Yesterday, he was like 95 percent, to the point where he could have played."

--Reliever Andrew Bailey (thumb) pitched in a Gulf Coast League game today, and struck out two batters, while throwing a couple 92-mph fastballs. Valentine said he felt good and that he's scheduled to pitch again on Sunday, in Double-A Portland.

--Daisuke Matsuzaka feels good and is next scheduled to pitch in Triple-A on Sunday. The hope is that he can get up to 80-90 pitches.

"After his 47-pitch stint the other day, he feels really good," said Valentine. "And he's going to give us more than that this next time out this weekend, pitching for Triple-A on Sunday.

"He feels good. Had a really good bullpen session."
