BOSTON -- The Red Sox traded for outfielder Quintin Berry on Tuesday, sending pitcher Clayton Mortensen to Kansas City before the waiver trade deadline.

As for why the Red Sox made the move to acquire Berry, who was playing for Kansas City's Triple-A affiliate, manager John Farrell pointed out the team's need for a speedy base-runner off the bench.

"We felt like we needed to have more of a pinch runner at our disposal, at some point in September and potentially beyond," said Farrell. "That's not to say he wouldn't get on the field in other ways. But, more of a pure base stealer was the one area that we felt we could upgrade."
