New Red Sox GM Ben Cherington has a lot of work to do this winter. He may be close to making a decision about the shortstop position for next season.
According to Michael Silverman of the Boston Herald "a source familiar with the Red Sox thinking" the team is leaning towards picking up a 6 million option for shortstop Marco Scutaro.
The veteran shortstop batted .299 with seven home runs and 54 RBI in 445 plate appearances for the club this season.
Scutaro's status was in question as shortstop prospect Jose Iglesias readies himself for the major leagues. Iglesias struggled this season in Pawtucket, so this may play into the decision to exercise the option on Scutaro.
