Here's Sean McAdam's chat from earlier this afternoon. He hit on the Bobby Valentine situation, Johnny Pesky's legacy, and the future -- because let's face it, that's all anyone's thinking about these days.
is bobby v going to get firedby jeff an hour ago
Jeff, I can't see it happening before the end of the season. If the Sox do fire him, they'll be sending the message that the players dictate what's going on. At the same time, I find it hard to believe he'll return for 2013.by Sean McAdam an hour ago
Sean, I am disgusted with the sox entire situation...I have a out of the box idea...the sox should name you the GM and make Lou Merloni the manager...I am being serious..the sox need to think out of the box to fix this massive mess..your thoughts ?by projo-warren an hour ago
I can't rule out Lou for manager, but theny'd be getting themselves in real trouble by hiring me in any capacity. I do have some thoughts on some unorthodox choices as next manager that I'll be writing about soon.by Sean McAdam an hour ago
with 2 years until BeckettLackeys contracts run out, what do you see happening with this team. Surely they cant just wait until those contracts expire can they?by adam from pei an hour agoAgreed, Adam. I would expect that they will more aggressively market Beckett this off-season. Can't see them moving Lackey until he proves that he's healthy next spring, but that shouldn't be ruled out, eitherby Sean McAdam an hour ago
Give me something positive Sean?by sam an hour ago
I'm trying, Sam. But we only have an hour here....Guess I would say that Iglesias and Lavarnway getting increased playing time this Sept. would offer a sneak peak at next season, which is about all anyone is thinking about now.by Sean McAdam an hour ago
how much is Ortiz' contract status if at all , affecting him playing with his achilles injury ?by projo-warren an hour ago
Don't see it being much of a factor at all. This is just taking longer than anticipated. The Achilles is a tricky thing, especially for someone at his age. Sox and Ortiz are being cautious, as they should be in this instance.by Sean McAdam an hour ago
What are your thoughts on the Jeff Passan Story yesterday and If Bobby V is not going to be back to next year why not fire him now? This way you can start the process of finding a long-term manager sooner rather then later. This way the new manager can be more involved in with Ben Cherington & Company put a team together.by jojo an hour ago
I'm not sure much would get accomplished by firing Valentine now. It's not as if there's a logical candidate waiting out there to save the season in the next six weeks. If they let him go soon after the season, there would be plenty of time to go through another managerial search and have him ready to go for 2013.by Sean McAdam an hour ago
On WEEI this morning they were saying that Larry luchinos contract was up after this year. Is this true and is there a chance he is not back?by Joe an hour ago
Ever since the Theo fiasco of 2005, the Sox have kept a very tight lid on details surrounding management contracts -- term, length, etc. There was a report in the spring that Lucchino had agreed to an extension, but there was never any announcement. I'm afraid I can't say what his contract status is. Unless Lucchino wants to go elsewhere, I have a hard time believing Henry wouldn't retain him.by Sean McAdam an hour ago
are you suprised at Pedroia's actions as revealed yesterday ?by projo-warren an hour ago
Don't know if you're referring to the picture or his part in the summit meeting with owners. But I'll say this: for a number of reasons, it's been pretty clear that Pedroia is not a big fan of Valentine's. Pedroia was close to Francona, which contributes to this. But he also publicly stuck up for Youkilis and has not hidden his distaste well. So, I guess, I would say: no surprise at all.by Sean McAdam an hour ago
Do you think the Sox will bring up some prospects who are farther away from the majors (Bradley, Bogarts) just to give the fan base some positives to end the year with?by jon in phoenix an hour ago
Interesting question, Jon. Neither play has played above Double A, and Bogaerts just got to Portland a week ago. It would be unusual for the Sox to double-jump players from Double A. But perhaps if they're truly out of it in September, they could bring those two up and get them acclimated, even if they don't play much.by Sean McAdam an hour ago
We know that Ellsbury will test the waters in free agency. But, is there any chance he would come back to the Sox? I see this situation much differently than Prince Fielder who was playing for a small market team and went to a more competitive team in Detroitby DK 38 minutes ago
A chance? Yes. Likely? No. As a Boras client, Ellsbury will go where the money is. But if the offers are pretty close, I get the sense that Ellsbury would rather play somewhere on the West Coast or close to it (ARI).by Sean McAdam 33 minutes ago
Any chance the Sox & Francona "kiss and make up" this offseason and he comes back? It happened with Theo.by jason 42 minutes agoAbsolutely zero chance. The ill will Francona has for this ownership group runs far, far deeper than anything Epstein felt in 2005.by Sean McAdam 34 minutes ago
What is your blame pie? Here is mine! 50 players, 40 management & 10 manager & coaches!by mike 41 minutes agoInteresting. Haven't really thought about it, but I agree the players are most responsible, then ownershippresident, then Valentine. To me, Cherington has the least amount of blame. Ownership and Lucchino have to take the blame for the poor communication that has infected the organization from the top down.by Sean McAdam 37 minutes ago
Is it possible we could see a fire sale in the offseason including trading huge players. For example pedroia seems to be a diva. I'm not saying we should trade him but would the sox consider it.by Joe an hour agoI think it's fair to say that after (what will be) three straight DNQs for the playoffs, very, very few are untouchable. I could see many players being shopped this winter, but I'd be surprised if Pedroia was on that list.by Sean McAdam 40 minutes ago
I want to see bobby v walk away from all this drama .... What are the chances bobby v just throws his hands up and quits?? He will get an Attaboy from me!by @iamrichieb 44 minutes ago
Don't see that happening. If he quits, he walks away from about 2.5 million in 2013. If he gets fired, he gets paid and still gets to have his say on the way out the door.by Sean McAdam 42 minutes agoLavarnway is being talked about now as the catcher of the future. Just a few months ago many were talking about Salty as an all-star catcher. What happened? Who are the Sox counting on to catch going forward?by steve an hour ago
Great question, Steve. This will be interesting to see how this unfolds over the next six weeks, especially with Shoppach now gone. Salty has a nice power surge in May and June, but I think there are still questions about his development as a catcher. Lavarnway has power, too, and I think he's developed a lot behind the plate in the last year -- as evidenced by the recent Baseball America poll of IL managers that named him as that league's best defensive catcher.by Sean McAdam 44 minutes ago
Any chance the team is sold in the near future?by andy an hour agoI don't see it happening anytime soon, Andy. I think the owners want to get this straightened out, both for their own egos and their bottom line. Wouldn't make much sense to sell now when the franchise is at a low point of their ownership. If they can win again in the next 3-4 years, I suppose they could listen to offers.by Sean McAdam an hour ago
Danny Valencia starting at 3B? Pedro Ciriaco starting at DH? is Bobby just mocking us fans now?by mcgoo an hour ago
Don't have a problem with either, actually. Valencia has more experience playing 3B than just about anyone on the active roster and Ciriaco has been something of a spark. It's not as if they have a superior offensive player wasting away on the bench.by Sean McAdam an hour ago
Hi Sean, I'm a big fan and really appreciate you taking the time to conduct this weekly chat. Here's my question: with everything that has happened here over the last couple years, do you think free agents will be at all interested in joining this team, organization, and city? Thanks!by DK an hour agoThanks for the kind words, DK. I enjoy these chats. As for free agents, I don't think it will have much impact. Most players like coming to a city where baseball has the following that the Sox do, playing before a full house every night and in contention most years. Some will be scared off by the intensityscrutiny, but that's always been the case.by Sean McAdam an hour ago
Given the concerns about Carl Crawford further injuring his throwing arm playing the outfield, why hasn't he DH'd with Papi out of the lineup?by Anne an hour ago
I asked this question of Valentine in Texas a few weeks ago when the manager was taking him out of games for fear that he would risk further injury with a throw in the late innings. Valentine said: "We want to get Carl into the swing of things.'' This whole Crawford-elbow issue is a mess, and another thing that they have to settle before too long. Crawford feels surgery is inevitable and the Sox management does not. Could get ugly down the road.by Sean McAdam an hour ago
Who do see the sox calling up in september?by rickg 15 minutes ago
Iglesias, Linares, Lin, Wilson, Stewart -- maybe a few others.by Sean McAdam 12 minutes ago
Who is your closer for 2013 with options like Bard, Bailey, Aceve, and where do players like Capenter, Wilson, Hill, Atchenson fit into the bull pen?by justin ct 26 minutes ago
To me, Bailey is the closer -- if healthy. Bard could go back to his old 8th inning role and Aceves could be the multi-inning middle guy. Hill could return as a lefty specialist. Atchison and Carpenter have to be healthy. As for Wilson, he could earn a spot with a good spring.by Sean McAdam 14 minutes ago
What is Ben Cherrington's reputation like with the rest of mlb? If he thinks this organization is a mess and he'll never have enough say as long as Lucchino is here and decides to leave, does he find another GM job pretty easily? Or is there not enough experience and track record there?by benjamin 35 minutes ago
Ben is pretty respected around the game, both for his knowledge and his character. I have no doubt he could find another job elsewhere if he wanted to, though maybe not necessarily a GM's role right away. I get the distinct sense, however, that, having grown up in New England and spending the last 11 or so years in this organization, he wants to fix this and not leave.by Sean McAdam 16 minutes ago
can you see the sox finishing with less than 70 wins ? I think its very possibleby projo-warren 23 minutes ago
They're bad, Warren, so nothing can be ruled out. But not winning more than 12 of their last 45? I don't think they're THAT bad.by Sean McAdam 18 minutes ago
Why is money getting in the way of playing the best players? Morales could do a lot better than 11 wins in 44 starts( Beckett and Lester).by mike in southie an hour ago
I don't know that "money is getting in the way.'' I think it's more about hoping that Lester and Beckett turn it around, if for no other reason than, in Beckett's case, rebuild his value for an off-season trade.by Sean McAdam 20 minutes ago
Do you think the Red Sox will make a run for Felix Hernandez this offseason. He is only 26 years old and longterm fix for this rotation. A guy you know will be productive year in year out. I understand he not only be expensive money wise but prospect wise as well. I just think its critical this gets themselves an established Ace to not only compete in their own division (cc sabathia, david price) but outside of their division (Verlander Weaver) as well so think the cost because its not rental situation.by jojo 35 minutes agoYour point about their need for a true ace is spot on, but all evidence suggests that the Mariners Will. Not. Trade. Felix. No way, no how. That won't stop the Sox from trying. He'd be worth whatever they have to give in terms of prospects, but I don't see it happening.by Sean McAdam 23 minutes ago
Sean, I can't imagine this happening but is this an offseason where the ownership tries to bring back fans in by signing big name free agents like they did with Crawford and Gonzalez? Basically what I am asking is if John Henry thinking "Hmmm we are losing intreast but Josh Hamilton would sell shirts and tickets. Lets give him 200 million dollars."by Joe 41 minutes ago
That's been their M.O. in the past after poor seasons. For their sake, they had better not. I cannot imagine a worse signing -- in every sense -- than Josh Hamilton. It would be a complete disaster. They can't look for a quick fix. And Greinke makes two.by Sean McAdam 26 minutes agoThe current circus has eclipsed our loss of Johnny Pesky. How about the fans wearing the number 6 instead of these players in the upcoming tribute at Fenway? What are your memories of Johnny?by Anne 35 minutes ago
Johnny's passing was a great loss for baseball and the Red Sox in particular. I know the Sox are planning a ceremony for next Tuesday, their first game back on the homestand. It was nice that Bruce Springsteen cited Johnny at Fenway, instructing the spotlight to shine on the Pesky Pole in honor of him. I first met Johnny in 1983 and he couldn't have been nicer to a young, nervous reporter. My lasting memory, of course, will be his part in the 2004 World Series celebration in St. Louis.by Sean McAdam 28 minutes agoWhat is your take about the video from the eraly season game which shows Ochoa arguing (apparently) with Shoppach and Lester throwing seed in Ochoa's face? Some opinions are that it was nothing joking .. but doesn't appear to be a jookeby redleg an hour ago
Don't know the story behind it, except that it was in April, because they were playing in Chicago. Ochoa does look pretty displeased. I'll add this: I doubt there were many tears shed when in that clubhouse when Shoppach was dealt to the Mets yesterday.by Sean McAdam 30 minutes ago
Do you think Bard can return to his old role as setup man in 2013 and beyond? Does he ever get another shot at starting?by yasky an hour ago
I think Bard can be an effective reliever again, yes. I would think this lost season puts an end to the starter role, however -- at least for the near future.by Sean McAdam 32 minutes ago

sean I'm curious who you think is leaking all these stories.....players, coaches, manager, front office, or ownership? For example, who stands to gain the most by leaking this latest (Passan) story?by andy in nh an hour ago
Could be any number of people -- agents who hear from their clients, or players on other teams who have heard from Sox players. Tough to say. I don't necessarily think it's anyone from inside the organization, though it could be.by Sean McAdam 11 minutes ago
Sean, If Bobby V doesn't come back who do you have on the short list of manager options?by vt_sox an hour ago
I think the Sox will have to get creative and perhaps think about some who haven't managed yet. Don Mattingly and Robin Ventura are just two examples of respected former players who went into big markets and had success -- without any managerial experience whatsoever.by Sean McAdam 8 minutes ago
Thanks to all of those who hung in with us despite some technical issues. Sorry, again, for those. We'll be back next Wednesday, hopefully, minus the glitches. Thanks again!by Sean McAdam 8 minutes ago
