TAMPA -- CC Sabathia was a teammate of Grady Sizemore's in Cleveland and was impressed when he saw Sizemore's big day Monday on ESPN.

"That's the Grady Sizemore I know,'' said Sabathia. "If he's healthy, that's the guy.''

Sizemore and Sabathia were with the Indians together from 2004 through the middle of 2008, when Sabathia was dealt to Milwaukee. From 2005 through 2008, Sizemore enjoyed his best four seasons and was among the top dozen or so players in the game.

"He was so much fun to watch when I played with him,'' said the New York left-hander. "He was young and full of energy and he would kind of take over the game. It was just fun to watch."

Subsequently, of course, Sizemore was limited by injuries and hasn't played a single game in the last two years. But even with the layoff and all the surgeries he's undergone, he's looked terrific this spring.

"Watching him yesterday was the first time I've seen him play (this spring),'' said Sabathia. "You’d think his timing would be off -- or something would be off. But he hit a ball off the wall to left field off a lefty. He looked good. When you’ve got talent like that, anything’s possible. Because he's such a good athlete, it's not really surprising for me."

Sabathia can't help but root for his former teammate, even though they might have to face one another as many as six times this season.

“It’s going to suck for me,” said a smiling Sabathia. “But I think it will be fun. I always welcome the competition. It’s just good to see him healthy and back out on the field playing."
