UPDATE: The Red Sox released a statement Tuesday saying, "This is a matter that the Red Sox take very seriously, and it is being addressed. The club will not make further comment on this matter."
Spring training has been cut short for one Red Sox prospect.
According to WFTX-TV Fort Myers, Red Sox LHP Drake Britton was arrested for DUI over the weekend. He was optioned back to AA-Portland on Monday by the team.
Britton was drafted by the Red Sox in 2007, where he signed a $700,000 signing bonus to join the team. Since then it's been an uphill battle for the lefty.
He underwent Tommy John surgery in 2009, and struggled in the minor leagues upon his return. Still, the Red Sox added him to their 40-man roster, something even he was surprised at.
In 16 games for the AA-Portland Sea Dogs in 2012, Britton went 4-7 with an ERA of 3.72 and 1.47. He struck out 76 batters in 84.2 innings. It was Britton's best season in the pros, and a huge step up from his 2011 season in which he went 1-13 with a 6.91 ERA.
Britton made two appearances for the Sox during spring training, giving up five hits and three earned runs in 3.1 innings.
More to come as the story unfolds . . .
