Report: Red Sox send Melancon to Pawtucket

That didn't take long.

Less than 24 hours after his dismal performance in the Red Sox' 18-3 loss to the Rangers on Tuesday night -- four hits (including three home runs) and two walks to the six batters he faced -- the Red Sox reportedly have sent reliever Mark Melancon to Pawtucket. The news was reported on Twitter by the Boston Globe's Nick Cafardo.

Melancon, who was acquired by the Sox from the Astros over the winter, has struggled all year. He's 0-2 in four games with a ghastly ERA of 49.50 (11 earned runs allowed in 2 innings.)

Manager Bobby Valentine hinted after Tuesday's game that Melancon may be shipped out. Melancon was surprised to hear the news, saying he felt he was close to turning things around.

A little over a week ago, Sean McAdam chronicled how little trust Valentine seemed to have in Melancon . . . and that was well before his most recent meltdowns.

Team Canada has the Boston Bruins -- two in particular -- to thank for a championship.
