FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Red Sox are starting today against the Pirates what is close to an Opening Day lineup. Manager John Farrell expects most of the regulars to travel to Clearwater on Sunday before getting some playing time in A-ball games at the team’s complex on Monday before the scheduled off-day, the last of the spring,  on Tuesday.

·  David Ortiz (heels) is expected to work out inside today and Farrell was hopeful Ortiz would be able to take swings in the batting cage.  For now, there is no best-case scenario for when Ortiz could begin running.

“No because as we’ve put certain things out there then it can be perceived differently or more negatively than it is,” said Farrell. “So we’re working off of David’s tolerance and the ability to ramp up the intensity. So the one thing,…what would we like to see before we break camp, that would be to see him on the field in some capacity, whether that’s running the bases, whether that’s taking BP on the field, that would be a reasonable goal, or reasonable step.”

·  Asked if he would like to see closer Joel Hanrahan get more than one inning of work, Farrell replied:

“Not right yet, but as we get into this final week, we’ll also look for him to close out ninth-inning situations as well, not just come in the game to get his work in and move on, but that’ll all start to be put in place with maybe some roles emerging.”

·  Pedro Ciriaco (back) is not available today, as the Sox had hoped. He may get into a game tomorrow, in the major league game  in Clearwater or in a minor league game at the complex.
·  Mitch Maier (left wrist) is also not available. He will be re-examined tomorrow with a plan mapped out after that.
·  Right-hander Graham Godfrey will start Monday against the Orioles in Sarasota.
