NEW YORK -- Both David Ortiz (Achilles) and Stephen Drew (concussion) are on the disabled list, but each is with the team in New York.

Ortiz was scheduled to do some cardio work and get treatment Sunday and will stay with the Sox until later this week before returning to Fort Myers.

"Hopefully," said manager John Farrell, "he's (getting) into (extended spring) games not too long after his return to Florida."

Drew, who was placed on the seven-day concussion DL and backdated to last week, is also close to returning to game action -- albeit, in Florida or with a minor league affiliate.

"With Stephen's situation," explained Farrell, "we're still working through the paperwork that's required for his release to get back onto the field in any game situation, whether it's extended spring training or on a rehab assignment. From a physical standpoint, he's improving. He feels like he's ready to get back into live pitching and game situations.''

  • Jon Lester, who will pitch his third straight season opener Monday, said it will be different to face former teammate Kevin Youkilis in pinstripes.

"It will be weird," acknowledged Lester. "I wouldn't have ever thought that it would happen. But he made that choice for him and his family and got a chance to play third base here. I'm sure he's excited about it. But now he's one of the bad guys, so we've got worry about his tomorrow."
