FORT MYERS, Fla. – Despite giving up three runs in his first inning of work Tuesday night, Clayton Mortensen settled down, holding Team Puerto Rico scoreless for his next two innings. He earned the win, in relief of John Lackey, as the Red Sox won, 4-3.
Mortensen’s shakiness in his first inning could have been because of some rust, manager John Farrell said. The right-hander had not been in a game since Feb. 26.
“I think the fact that he was out there for the first time in six days, and particularly this early in camp without the frequency of work,” Farrell said. “Even he said coming in after the first inning he felt a little mechanical. And with a little more freeness and just executing from pitch to pitch. He settled down after the first inning and threw as he’s capable.
