FORT MYERS, Fla. -- After running the bases the past two days, David Ortiz has a scheduled down day today. He is scheduled to run the bases again on Thursday, with the same level of intensity he had on Monday, and again Friday in his two-days-on, one-day-off schedule.

“I think he’s looking forward to the recovery day here,” manager John Farrell said. “And it’s more associated with just general soreness from the activity. It’s not because of a flare-up of any kind. These are things that were all expected that he’s going to go through.”

The Sox have not reached the point when Opening Day is not a viable possibility.

“We’re not there yet,” Farrell said. “David has mentioned he’d like to get a minimum of 50 at-bats which we can get on the minor league side. Once we’re to the point of the recovery becoming a little bit more regular, then we can start get everyday at-bats, whether it’s in games on this side or when we’re on the road over on the minor league side. So I think the most important thing is he’s making anticipated progress.”
