JUPITER, Fla. -- While Mike Napoli ran the bases for the first time in Fort Myers, designated hitter David Oritz won't get cleared to do the same until at least next weekend.
"I would say another additional week compared to Napoli," said manager John Farrell.
That means Ortiz might have to scramble to get enough in-game at-bats before Opening Day. Ortiz has found that he needs to get plenty of at-bats to avoid the slow starts he experienced in 2010 and 2011.
But for now, Farrell isn't concerned.
"The fact that he's taking regular BP right now, he's at least getting that baseline," said Farrell. "And come (the middle) of the month, we're not pinned into our game schedule with the 'A' games. We can use the minor league games to get him 5-6 at-bats on a given day. We can build that number in pretty quickly on the back field."
"I still think there's plenty of time to get to the point where he feels his timing is consistent. We'll take advantage of every opportunity."
