BOSTON -- Designated hitter David Ortiz, who made his season debut Saturday after being sidelined with Achilles and heel ailments, is in the starting lineup for the first game. Asked if Ortiz would be available for both games, John Farrell said probably not.
“Likely not, but we’ll check with him after game one," Farrell explained. "I think we’ve got to be conscious of how much we load on him right away.”
Here are a few injury updates for the Sox.

  • John Lackey (right biceps) will make a rehab start for Double-A Portland on Monday, expected to go four innings, throwing about 65 pitches. Farrell said if Lackey comes through his outing with no issues, it may be the only rehab start he needs.
  • Craig Breslow (shoulder) is scheduled to pitch one inning for Portland on Tuesday.
  • Franklin Morales (back) is scheduled to start on Wednesday for Pawtucket. Morales had originally been scheduled to follow Lackey on Monday. But, Farrell said Morales was pushed back “not because of anything ailing or anything like that,” the Sox just wanted to give the left-hander a chance to start a game. Farrell said Morales, who made a rehab start April 17, going three innings for Greenville, will likely need at least two more starts, including Wednesday's, before he is ready.
  • The Sox are hoping closer Joel Hanrahan (right hamstring) will be able to throw off a mound either Monday or Tuesday.
