FORT MYERS, Fla. – David Ortiz is scheduled for another, but lighter, round of baserunning drills Tuesday. This would represent the first time he has completed the drills on consecutive days - a threshold manager John Farrell had said Ortiz would have to cross before getting into a game – as he continues to rehab the strain in his right Achilles that limited him to 90 games last season.
“He’ll actually go through some more baserunning today, less volume, less intensity, which is called for in his program,” Farrell said. “But the soreness following those intense baserunning sessions is less today than it was three days ago. So he’s making steady progress."
“I think once he comes out of today we’ll determine [what] the next steps are. We’re only in Tuesday of this week. We’re going to work off of David’s response to the work sessions. But the fact that he’s able to get back on the base paths today and feel pretty good about himself before going into it is a positive sign.”
Farrell could not yet say whether Ortiz would get into a game by the end of the week.
“Hopeful, but again not going to rush this for a matter of a  date this week on the calendar,” Farrell said.
