FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Shane Victorino, who has some soreness in his left side, is "improved,'' according to Farrell, but still won't play Wednesday.

"He would be playing (if this were) the regular season,'' said Farrell. "He was really cleared to play today, but I felt like, where we are in camp, another day of precautionary (rest) is where we're at.''

Farrell said Victorino will play in a game Thursday, but the Sox aren't sure if that will be Thursday night in the major league game against Minnesota or in a minor league game during the day.

By playing in a minor league game, the Sox would hold open the possibility that they could place him on the DL retroactively and still have him available a week into the season.

Victorino has played in just eight games this spring, and the Sox would have preferred more, but don't have major concerns.

"He's going to be our right fielder on Opening Day, I can tell you that,'' said Farrell. "This has been a little bump in the road, but we expect him back on the field (Thursday).''

* Daniel Nava will play center field in a Triple A game Wednesday afternoon.

* Jon Lester, held out of Wednesday's afternoon game with Baltimore since he'll pitch against them Monday in the opener, will pitch in a minor league setting in his last outing in Florida.
