FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Craig Breslow will make his spring debut Monday, and tellingly, he'll do so in a minor league game.

That will leave the Red Sox the option of placing Breslow on the DL retroactively if they don't believe a few outings this week is enough to get him ready for the season.

Players who play in minor league games, where no admission is charged, don't count the same as appearing in Grapefruit League games.

If Breslow were to be placed on the DL retroactively, he would be eligible to come off April 5, the fifth game of the season.

Should Breslow not be ready, all signs point to Brandon Workman as his temporary replacement.

* The Sox will use a "bullpen game'' Monday at Sarasota, using a bunch of relievers against the Orioles. That will allow Jake Peavy to stay back and pitch a minor league game in Fort Myers and not face a division opponent so close to the start of the season.

The same will be arranged for Jon Lester Wednesday, with Allen Webster starting against the Orioles in Fort Myers, while Lester -- who will face the O's in the regular season opener on March 31 -- will pitch a minor league game.
