FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Exhibition play starts Thursday afternoon and Grapefruit League games start Saturday, but neither new first baseman Mike Napoli (hip) nor DH David Ortiz (achilles) have been cleared and won't be for another week at least.
"We're hopeful that Mike will take game at-bats later next week," said John Farrell. "We just want to make sure that, in Mike's case, in addition to the impact of all the defensive work, we've got to run him through the bases. We've got some running still do with him but there's no reason to think he's going to continue to ramp up without any setback.
"David will maintain the agility program that he's on and that continues to increase in intensity. They'll go through a baserunning progression to be fully cleared and right now there's no reason to think that there's not going to continue on its path."
Napoli is aiming for the end of next week for games; with Ortiz, there's a less specific timetable.
"Don't have a time frame on that," Farrell said. "I would hope it's not going to be too far behind. The one we don't want to do is earmark a date and then all of a sudden, there's a letdown. We're not at that point. Napoli is a little bit ahead of David. My sense is, based on our medical staff, he'll run the bases sometime in the next week and providing everything comes out of that fine, I think later next week, you'll see him in the lineup."
Asked how long Oritz will need to get ready for the regular season, Farrell estimated two weeks.
"If you ask any hitter," he said, "they get their timing (down) pretty good in a two week period. That's going to get him 35-40 at-bats. Time is on our side in terms of position players."
