FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Lefthander Franklin Morales traveled to Boston Wednesday to have his lower back further examined by specialists. Morales is on his way back to Red Sox camp.

"He's been undergoing treatment here," said manager John Farrell, "but hasn't really made the improvements that we had hoped for. So we just had him checked. He'll be back here today and we'll have more of a detailed update once he returns. I don't have any findings or specific reports coming from that exam."

Morales was to be one of the team's depth starter who got stretched out in spring training in the event the team needed an extra starter early this season.

Clayton Mortensen is another candidates to serve as a swing man, though Farrell said it was unlikely he'll pitch more than three innings at a time here.

"If you're looking at a sixth starter," said Farrell, "Alfredo (Aceves) would be the guy we'd stretch out first."
