BOSTON -- Since restarting his rehab assignment with the Pawtucket Red Sox, Will Middlebrooks has served strictly as the team's designated hitter. That changed Friday night, with Middlebrooks scheduled to play third base.
In two games since returning to the field after experiencing a setback in his rehab, Middlebrooks is 2-for-6 with a triple, a home run and two runs scored.
Mike Carp had been hitting in the same lineup as Middlebrooks for two games, but he'll play at Double-A Portland on the Fourth of July. According to Farrell, Carp couldn't get a flight to join the PawSox in Syracuse on Thursday night so instead he'll play for the Sea Dogs against New Britain at 6 p.m.
In five games with Pawtucket since starting his rehab assignment as he recovers from a foot fracture, Carp is 1-for-13 (.077).
Shane Victorino, who experienced a setback while rehabbing his strained hamstring last week, continued to ramp up his running and agility work on the field at Fenway on Friday before the rain began.
