SARASOTA, Fla. -- Third baseman Will Middlebrooks left Wednesday's night game at Ed Smith Stadium after a first-inning checked swing resulted in an injury.

Middlebrooks swung at a pitch that was up-and-in from Baltimore Orioles starter Chris Tillman and immediately grimmaced. Manager John Farrell came out to confer with Middlebrooks and the decision was soon made to remove Middlebrooks from the game.

As he walked off the field, Middlebrooks appeared to be holding his right hand close. Middlebrooks missed the last two months of his rookie season after being hit on that same hand in early August in a game in Cleveland.

When Middlebrooks reached the top step of the dugout, he fired his helmet in frustration and headed to the clubhouse.

Pedro Ciriaco finished the at-bat and took over in the bottom of the first inning at third base.

The Red Sox later tweeted that Middlebrooks suffered some right wrist soreness and will be reevaluated on Thursday.
