There was some surprise when the Red Sox extended shortstop Stephen Drew a qualifying offer of $14.1 million for next season.

It's certainly a lot of money to give a guy like Drew, but perhaps it was a bold move by the Sox to perhaps acquire an extra first round pick - and if not, spend a couple extra bucks on a guy for one season.

Lou Merloni thinks no other teams will bite, and that Drew will be back with the Sox.
"Once you give a qualifying offer to Stephen Drew, I believe he's your shortstop next year because $14 million dollars," Merloni said. "Guarantee Scott Boras is not happy at all they gave him a qualifying offer, because it hurts his client in the free agent market."

Sean McAdam says that a team like the Cardinals, who are expected to get a pick back for Carlos Beltran, could be inclined to give up their own first round pick for Drew if that happens.

Bob Neumeier agrees that in a weak market, Drew may get another offer from a team desperate for a shortstop.

If not, though, the Sox will take back Drew for a season and be OK with it.

"It's a huge advantage to big market teams," McAdam said.
