Bobby Valentine's public questioning of Kevin Youkilis looked particularly appropriate Tuesday night, when Youk struck out four times in the Red Sox' 18-3 loss to the Rangers.
But Sean McAdam wonders if the controversy won't hurt Valentine more in the long run.
"I think Valentine may have inadvertently put himself in the crosshairs by throwing himself into this controversy and attracting attention, injecting himself into a battle with a player," McAdam told Bob Neumeier on 'SportsNet Central' Tuesday night. "Even though he sort of walked the comments back, people are going to be looking for clues, looking to see how this team responds to his leadership.
"And off the last couple of games, that's not a positive. They'd won three in a row against Tampa and then lost two in a row after the controversy broke . . .
"If they continue to struggle, Valentine is going to at the very heart of what people are looking at, and they'll be questioning whether he's the right guy here."
