BOSTON – Before his team worked out Thursday afternoon at Fenway Park, Red Sox manager John Farrell announced that left-hander Jon Lester would be his Game 1 starter in the American League Championship Series that begins Saturday night at Fenway Park.

With their opponent still unknown, Farrell said he would wait until after Thursday night’s decisive Game 5 between the A’s and Tigers before announcing the rest of his rotation.

Lester, who was also the Opening Day starter and finished the regular season at 15-8 with a 3.75 ERA,  started Game 1 of the Sox’ ALDS against the Rays. He went 7 2/3 innings, giving up two runs on three hits and three walks with seven strikeouts in the Sox 12-2 win.  Lester was followed in the ALDS by John Lackey, Clay Buchholz, and Jake Peavy.

“We’ll get a better read on it once we get through tonight, and plan for who we’re going to play,” Farrell said.

Farrell said the opponent as well as the ballpark will be among the considerations.

“We’ll factor everything in that will be available to us and that starts with who we’re going to play,” he said.
