Lester leads Red Sox past Yankees, 4-1

NEW YORK -- As bad as they've otherwise been this season, the Red Sox have had decent success at Yankee Stadium.

They beat the Yankees in New York for the third time in five tries 4-1 on Saturday. The Sox rode a two-run opposite-field homer to left by Adrian Gonzalez in the first to a quick 2-0 lead. Gonzalez now has 22 RBI in August, tops in the American League.

Jon Lester turned in his second straight strong start, limiting the Yankees to a single run over seven innings. He allowed just five hits, with the lone run off him coming on a homer by Curtis Granderson, who drilled a pitch to straightaway center with two out in the fourth inning.

Lester worked out of a tough jam in the first, when he had two runners in scoring position, but fanned Casey McGehee to strand two.

In the eighth, Andrew Bailey allowed a one-out single to Nick Swisher, bringing Robinson Cano to the plate, representing the potential trying run. But lefty Craig Breslow needed just one pitch to get Cano to hit into an inning-ending double play.

The third Red Sox came in the fifth when Pedro Ciriaco (four hits) singled and scored on a double to the right field corner by Nick Punto. They added an insurance run in the ninth when Scott Podesednik scored from third on a wild pitch.
