CLEVELAND -- After determining that closer Joel Hanrahan needs "five to seven" days of down time to recover from a strained right hamstring, the team placed him on the disabled list Tuesday.

To take Hanrahan's place, the Sox promoted knuckleballer Steven Wright from Pawtucket to pitch out of the bullpen.

"Steven will provide multi-innings for us out of the bullpen," said Farrell. "But we found on (Monday's) follow-up evaluation that it was going to be a total of five-to-seven days recovery time for the hamstring. So him going on the DL was pretty clear cut. This will also give us a chance to get him a couple of rehab appearances to get back going and test it at full speed."
