It can't be fun getting traded away from a team that you love. That's certainly the case for both Jon Lester and Jonny Gomes.
But it helps that they're both going to a World Series contender in the Oakland A's.
Gomes probably didn't know it at the time, but he joined a World Series contender last season as well, helping the Sox as the team won their third World Series since 2004. That season and those memories will stay with him forever, especially when he walks into his house he'll be reminded.
"I mean, the memorabilia that I'm bringing away from this place, personally, 2013 championship stuff, there's a spot in my house and spot in my house forever for my Red Sox jersey," Gomes said. "Scooped up some Red Sox dirt, I'll take that home. And that ring is a lifer."
I'm pretty fortunate to have the opportunity just to wear that uniform and be one of two teams in the history of this ballpark to clinch at home."
Gomes and Lester also benefit from heading to another team together. Gomes is no stranger to the A's, playing there two seasons ago and growing up in the area, but it'll be new to Lester.
"To tell you the truth he might be a little more fortunate I'm on his side because I played there before," Gomes said of Lester. "Yeah, we'll be on the flight tomorrow together. I'll help him with the A's and B's, but at the end of the day we have the same goal and that's to help this organization win."
