FORT MYERS, Fla. – Left fielder Jonny Gomes was out of the lineup for the second straight day after receiving three stitches in his left knee. Gomes collided with the outfield wall in Sarasota Wednesday night against the Orioles. He stayed in the game after the collision.

“It’s OK,” Gomes said, Friday afternoon. “Just a nice ninja slice across my knee. But if it was the regular season, I’d be in there.”

Gomes said he didn’t realize the extent of the injury  until he came out of the game at his scheduled time, after three plate appearances, and found blood on his knee.

Manager John Farrell said he would likely give Gomes a few more games to rest.

“Still probably another couple of days away,” Farrell said. “We want to make sure that the laceration has a chance to start to close up and not prolong anything there. You talk to him, he wants to play tonight. But we’re still in the day-to-day thing with him.

“Three stitches are there obviously for a reason, we’ll just give it a chance to heal up.”
