BOSTON -- Will Middlebrooks may not be as close to a return to the Red Sox as had been previously thought.
While manager John Farrell had intimated in recent days that Middlebrooks could be with the team soon after Shane Victorino's activation, and perhaps as early as this weekend, he clarified on Saturday that there has been no timetable set for the third baseman's return.
"He'll continue to play third base everyday at Pawtucket," Farrell said. "I think there's been a little bit of confusion with some of the messages that's been interpreted that he was going to be activated this weekend or at the same time as Vic . . . The one thing we want to make sure is that he continues to get everyday at-bats. For the time being, that'll take place in Pawtucket."
The clock on Middlebrooks' rehab assignment restarted when he played in Pawtucket on Friday night so he could be kept at the Triple A level for as many as 19 more days, starting Saturday.
Middlebrooks has been on the disabled list since May 17 with finger and wrist injuries.
