Jonny Gomes isn't a stranger to the walk-off, and Red Sox manager John Farrell knows that.
Gomes had already hit a walk-off home run once before this season, so Farrell decided to pinch hit Gomes for Brandon Snyder in the ninth inning Wednesday night, and it paid off.
Gomes hit his second walk-off home run of the season, the team's seventh walk-off win, as Boston beat the San Diego Padres 2-1 on Wednesday.
"It felt like this was an opportunity to pick a spot to use Gomes," Farrell said, "and a flair for the dramatic, whatever you want to call it, he got a slider in the middle of the plate and walked it off."
As a pinch hitter this season, Gomes is 4 for 12 with two home runs and three RBIs.
"He stays prepared," Farrell said of Gomes. "In the role that he's in, he's got a lot of experience in it and he's got a flare for the dramatic."
Farrell talks about Gomes, Lester's pitching performance and the overall state of the Red Sox in the video.
