BATIMORE — The Red Sox' plans for Felix Doubront are unclear for the playoffs. He won't be in the rotation, but he's not guaranteed a spot in the bullpen, either.
"He believes in himself and he feels like he's worthy of being a starter," said John Farrell, "which you want out of an individual. He's had a solid year for us and we want to be sure that if he is in the bullpen, in the post-season, that not only is he buying into the role, but this is about the team at this point. Whatever role you're in, you've got to buy in and contribute however we can to win 11 more games, starting Friday."
Farrell also indicated that the Sox want to see more of an off-season commitment to conditioning from Doubront.
"He needed some downtime," noted Farrell. "It did catch up to him. This is the second year in a row that he's had to take a little bit of a breather late in the season. That's where adjustments are already in place and planned for this off-season to hopefully avoid that. As much as we talked about what John Lackey did, he has got to go through something. That's not to say a reshaping of the body but there's got to be a greater foundation laid before spring training starts.
"There's been multiple conversations about it. The talent is there. We talked about it after his start against Toronto. You see more in there. He's an extremely talented guy and we want to get the most out of it."
