The first-place Red Sox made a big splash at the trade deadline in acquiring starting pitcher Jake Peavy from the White Sox. The two things they didn't get were a bat in the lineup and another arm in the bullpen.

Steve Buckley, Bob Ryan and Michael Felger wonder if Red Sox GM Ben Cherington did enough at the trade deadline to lead the Sox through the playoff push.

"I think they did all right," Buckley said. "The issue that I don't have is that they can get bullpen help later on through the waiver wire. … These relievers will be available in the coming weeks."

Ryan said he wouldn't want the Red Sox to bring back Jon Papelbon from the Phillies.

"I don't like the way he's going, I don't like the person he's turned into," Ryan said.
