Cheers! Fenway crowd welcomes back Sox

BOSTON -- The things we worry about.
For all the talk of the nastiness and bitterness the Red Sox would face from the Fenway Faithful in their first appearance before the home folk since last September 21, the pregame ceremonies before the Sox' home opener against the Rays on Friday was a virtual lovefest.
The only Sox player who heard a modicum of boos -- and they were mixed with plenty of cheers -- was Josh Beckett, leader of the beer-and-chicken brigade. There were also a few for Bobby Valentine, but they were drowned out by cheers. The rest? Nary was heard a discouraging word.
But the biggest ovation of the day went to someone who's not the roster. 92-year-old Johnny Pesky -- who didn't to spring training this year, and who had to be assisted as he walked the field -- received a rousing welcome from the crowd.
