DUNEDIN, Fla. -- Xander Bogaerts is in the lineup today, starting at shortstop against the Blue Jays. It is his first time in the lineup since returning from the World Baseball Classic on Wednesday.
“We’ll get a chance to see him at shortstop where he feels most comfortable defensively,” manager John Farrell said. “But we think over the next four days or so he’s still going to get enough at-bats to get his timing in.  He played the last couple of days in minor league games. So just try to get him reacclimated to a daily schedule but definitely looking forward to seeing him on the field.”
When he returned to camp Bogaerts acknowledged he was tired from being gone for almost a month and traveling between multiple times zones, a concern for the Sox. But, there are mitigating factors.
“Yeah, but at the same time he’s also 20 years old. He’s probably got a little more life than  a 50 year old,” Farrell said. “So that’s a good thing. But that was part of getting him in minor league games upon his arrival back here.”
Farrell has been impressed with what he has seen from Bogaerts this spring.
“Very mature,” he said. “He’s very much at ease in this environment. He hasn’t seemed to be in awe in any type of way. And I think the WBC experience for him was tremendous,  the settings he played in, the players and teams he went up against, so you look at his situation a little bit different than maybe Shane’s with the number of at-bats we’ve seen. So yeah that was a very positive experience for Xander.
