Big third inning carries Red Sox over Phillies, 6-2

PHILADELPHIA -- The Red Sox seemed to bleed the Philadelphia Phillies to death Thursday night, taking full advantage of six walks and three errors by the home team while pounding out 11 hits -- all but one of them singles -- in an easy 6-2 victory.

Justin Masterson pitched six strong innings, stumbling only in the second when the Phils managed to score their only two runs.

Masterson allowed just three hits while walking two and striking out seven.

He also contributed two hits at the plate, one of them a run-scoring single to center.

Every member of the Red Sox starting lineup reached base at least once, with Xander Bogaerts, demoted to eighth in the order beginning Wednesday, reached base five times with three hits. Bogaerts also had the only extra-base hit of the night for the Sox -- an opposite-field triple that cleared the bases as part of the Red Sox' six-run third.

Boston sent 10 men to the plate that inning, and all of the runs came after two were out.

Philadelphia starter David Buchanan -- the first of five Phils pitchers on the night -- lasted just three innings.

Craig Breslow, Tommy Layne and Edward Mujica followed Masterson to the mound for the Red Sox.
