FORT MYERS, Fla. -- It seemed like a nice bit of confluence for Matt Barnes. But then the facts got in the way.

Barnes recalled that his first start as a freshman at the University of Connecticut also came against Boston College.

How ironic? Three years later, here he was, facing the same opponent, in his first major league spring training game.

"I was talking about that to someone today," marveled Barnes, "that I pitched against them in college and now my first start down here is going to be against them. It's kind of cool."

But a check of box scores from Barnes's college career revealed that he had never faced BC, a fact confirmed by the University of Connecticut's Sports Information Department.

"Really?" said a surprised Barnes later. "I remember being (at Shea Field at Chestnut Hill), but maybe the first one was against somebody else."

Barnes then recounted that BC had been among the most aggressive schools in recruiting him, before suddenly dropping out, leaving Barnes to choose between UConn and St. John's.
