TORONTO -- Bobby Valentine insisted it was nothing to be alarmed about, but shortstop Mike Aviles suffered a slight left ankle sprain in Monday night's game and was out of the lineup for the second game of the Red Sox' series with the Blue Jays.
Nick Punto, who had started at third base and hit leadoff when Valentine was looking for a spark Sunday, was at short Tuesday night, batting ninth.
"He's fine," said Valentine of Aviles, who took extra hitting Tuesday afternoon and was available for the game if need be. "It's a good opportunity to (get Punto back in the lineup)."
Aviles rolled his ankle a bit running out of the batter's box when he grounded out to third.
