FORT MYERS, Fla. -- At this point, there may not be much suspense left, but a formal announcement on who has won the starting center field spot for the Red Sox may not come until Friday.
The Sox are at 35 players remaining in camp, and need to cut down to 25 before they leave Fort Myers for Baltimore Saturday night.
On Wednesday morning, John Farrell said the team will likely make most of its cuts before Thursday night's game with Minnesota, but indicated the center field situation may not be officially resolved until Friday.
The Sox seem intent on waiting as long as possible on Grady Sizemore to see how he comes through a stretch of three straight games, which will conclude Thursday night.
There seems little doubt, however, that bearing something unforeseen, Sizemore will be in center next Monday when the Sox open the season in Baltimore.
Farrell said that if Sizemore is the choice, the team would determine his backup option in center on a case-by-case basis. Daniel Nava and Shane Victorino are the options, and will be chosen partly by what ballpark the Sox are in.
The manager indicated that in Fenway, the Sox would prefer to leave Victorino in right.
