We're breaking down the personnel and pecking order at each position as the Patriots prepare to open camp this week.
Darrelle Revis, Brandon Browner, Logan Ryan, Alfonzo Dennard, Kyle Arrington, Jemea Thomas, Justin Green, Travis Hawkins, Daxton Swanson, Malcolm Butler.
Revis is the linchpin of this group and one of the more compelling stories in the NFL this year. Is he still the best corner in football by a wide margin? Will he flourish in the Patriots’ system and is he renting or buying in New England? Brandon Browner, Logan Ryan and Alfonzo Dennard are going to fight for and share the other cornerback spot. Browner’s down for the first four games and Dennard is coming back from offseason surgeries so the door’s open for Ryan to make his case. If Dennard gets boxed out by the Browner/Ryan combo, he’ll still have a home inside working as Arrington’s backup as the slot corner. Arrington is very good in there, It’s going to be a hard group to crack. Among the players trying to do so is one draft pick. The Patriots spent a sixth-rounder on the stocky Thomas, a rookie from Georgia Tech. Justin Green spent last season on the practice squad and got a call-up at the end of the year. He can fly. Hawkins was a very good special teams player at Delaware and is another whippet-quick corner. Swanson has better length and was with the Colts and Niners. He looked good during OTAs that we had access to. Malcolm Butler was undrafted out of West Alabama and has an uphill fight ahead of himself.
