The Patriots have largely run the same offense for the past 13 seasons.
If the Colts imported Deion Branch to tell them what the hell New England is up to when they have the ball, they’re in deeper trouble defensively than we thought. And they appeared to be in plenty of trouble Saturday when they allowed 44 to the diminished Chiefs.
Branch, possibly Tom Brady’s most trusted receiver in his time in New England, is a Colts because of LaVonn Brazill, Griff Whalen and Da’Rick Rogers . . . not Tom Brady.
The gentlemen I mentioned are the receivers Indy has behind T.Y. Hilton, who was targeted 18 times by Andrew Luck on Saturday against the Chiefs.
The Patriots MO is to take away the opposition’s best offensive player. LaVonn, Griff and Da’Rick aren’t going to win you a lot of games. A smart player like Branch working with a smart quarterback like Andrew Luck means the Colts just upped their odds on a few sideline outs and in-cuts.
I will not say that Deion Branch can’t play. But it smacks of Colts GM Ryan Grigson saying, “We are screwed at wideout and have to sign someone smart. Now.”
On name alone, signing Branch days before a playoff showdown might make all the kids in the caf stand up and say, “Oooooooohhhh….!”
In reality, it deserves and, “oh.”
