FOXBORO – Tell you what, when it comes to scouting Rutgers, nobody – NOBODY – beats the New England Patriots.
After selecting cornerback Logan Ryan with the 83rd overall pick, the Patriots came back and took strong safety Duron Harmon with the 92nd overall pick.
Those Scarlet Knights of the secondary join Devin McCourty, the cornerback turned safety that the Patriots selected out of Rutgers in 2010.
The 6-1, 200-pound Harmon is this year’s “Who the *&^& is that player.” Last season, the Patriots had a pair of them – Tavon Wilson and Nate Ebner.
He was a two-time All Big East player at Rutgers and started 27 of 50 games at Rutgers. He had 50 tackles as a senior and the Patriots other third-round pick, Logan Ryan, proclaimed that he and Harmon are best friends.
Both Harmon and Ryan have special teams upside which is a constant with the Patriots. But it should be pointed out that the Patriots most impactful secondary player – Aqib Talib – plays no special teams to speak of and only runs around covering receivers.
