Vince Wilfork has reportedly requested a release from the Patriots, according to the NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
Wilfork is due to earn $7.5 million in base salary in 2014, which is the final year of his five-year $40 million deal. His salary-cap charge is $11.6 million.
If he is released, the Patriots will have about $3.6 million count against their cap, but they will receive $8 million in cap savings to spend elsewhere.
Wilfork will be 33 in November and is coming off of an Achilles injury that ended his 2013 season after four games. He was reportedly approached by the Patriots about a restructure once, but it was "a non-starter," according to Rapoport.
