New England's offseason due diligence continues.
The Patriots have tried out tight end Bo Scaife, reports Scout.com's Aaron Wilson.
Scaife started 23 games for Tennessee, catching 81 passes for 758 yards and five touchdowns, in his last two active seasons. He landed with the Bengals in 2011 during free agency, but was relegated to injured reserve in August with a shoulder injury and never played.
So why would the Patriots bring him in? Remember, they flirted inconsequentially with Dallas Clark less than two weeks ago. And a rookie free agent tight end, Nick Melillo, was signed on Tuesday.
Depth is never a bad thing, especially with Rob Gronkowski still recuperating from ankle surgery, Daniel Fells being sidelined with an undisclosed injury, and Brad Herman and Melillo being so green (but happily cheap).
But in all likelihood, the Patriots just want to know what's out there.
