The Patriots are reportedly the "lead" team in pursuit of Cleveland Browns receiver Josh Cribbs.

Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reported on Twitter that the Patriots have a leg up on the Cardinals and 49ers in competition for the 29-year-old utility player.

Cribbs made his reputation in the league as a return man but has slid away from those roles in the past two seasons. His offensive production has been tepid for the moribund Browns. He caught 41 balls in 2011 and seven in 2012.

With Wes Welker and Julian Edelman both on the free-agent market now, it will be interesting to see what role the Pats believe Cribbs can fill. For him to go from a seven-catch guy to a 120-catch guy (or a 60-catch guy) would be quite a leap.
