The Patriots will bring in outside linebacker Matt Shaughnessy for a visit on Wednesday, according to ESPN's Field Yates.
Shaughnessy is one of three players, including linebacker Wesley Woodyard and receiver Brandon LaFell, reportedly visiting Foxboro today.
The former Cardinals backer is 27 years old and a converted defensive lineman, which is where he spent the bulk of his time on the field as a member of the Raiders from 2009-12. He checks in at 6-foot-5 and 285 pounds, and according to Pro Football Focus, his strength is in defending opposing running games.
Last season Shaughnessy had three sacks, five quarterback hits and 19 hurries. In his five-year career, he has 18.5 sacks.
If the Patriots are looking to cut down on the snaps for Chandler Jones and Rob Ninkovich -- they were No. 1 and No. 2 in the league in snaps played by defensive ends last season -- Shaughnessy seems to be the kind of depth piece who could give them a blow.
