Nick McDonald, who was released by the Patriots Wednesday, failed a physical according to a report by Nick Underhill of MassLive.com.
The release of McDonald came as a surprise, given that he had an impressive 2012 season for the Patriots, his first full season in New England. He saw action in 12 games, starting four, proving his versatility by splitting time between center and right guard.
It has not been confirmed that the failed physical is why McDonald was cut, although multiple media reports say McDonald was released with a "failed physical" designation.
In news that should not come as much of a surprise, the Patriots signed a former Rutgers player, defensive tackle Scott Vallone, according to Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun. The Pats drafted three Rutgers players this past April.
Vallone played four years at Rutgers, picking up 195 tackles and 8.5 sacks. He was an All-Big East selection in his senior season of 2012.
