On the heels of the news that Julian Edelman will test free agency, the Patriots will bring in Brandon LaFell for a visit, according to ESPN.
New England reportedly offered Edelman a three-year deal, but the Patriots and Edelman could not agree to a deal on Tuesday before a team-imposed 4 p.m. deadline. Now they're bringing in Edelman's potential replacement for a face-to-face meeting.
LaFell, in theory, would be a sensible substitute for Edelman. At 6-foot-2 and 208 pounds, LaFell is a longer target than Edelman (6-feet, 198). But if the Patriots are looking for someone who can play both outside and in the slot, LaFell fits the bill. He played out of the slot in 63 percent of his snaps in 2013.
In the first four seasons of his career, all with the Panthers, LaFell has been a durable player, appearing in at least 14 games every year. He played all 16 games last season, making 49 catches for 627 yards and five touchdowns. In Carolina's Week 10 game against the Patriots, LaFell had one of his best games of the season, pulling in seven catches for 59 yards and a score.
