Jermaine Cunningham may have suffered a season-ending injury in Jets training camp, according to a report by NFL Network. The Jets believe that the former Patriots pass rusher has torn his Achilles, but they have not yet made a roster move on account of his injury.
Cunningham was released by the Patriots before the start of last season, and after spending a brief period with the 49ers was signed by the Jets last November. Cunningham (as well as former Patriots corner Ras-I Dowling) had impressed at points during Jets camp this summer.
Had he not been injured, Cunningham likely would have competed for a roster spot as a third-down rusher in coach Rex Ryan's defense.
A second-round selection by New England in 2010, Cunningham had 3.5 sacks in his three seasons with the team. After a rookie season in which he started 11 games, he was unable to reclaim a role as a regular on the Patriots defense.
