Right now, it’s a coin flip as to whether Rob Gronkowski plays Sunday against Tampa Bay.

The tight end is 50-50 to play, according to ESPNBoston.com. Gronkowski’s return, even at what would most certainly be less than vintage Gronk, would be a boon to a Patriots offense that last week used Michael Hoomanawanui and Matt Mulligan at the position against the Jets.

The strongest and most promising position on the offense a season ago, the Patriots have gone through a litany of Gronkowski injuries, the arrest and release of Aaron Hernandez, the disappointing performance of Jake Ballard after returning from injuries, a hamstring injury to rookie Zach Sudfeld that kept him out of last week’s game, and the release of Daniel Fells.

Gronkowski is coming back from offseason back surgery that came on the heels of four surgeries to repair a broken arm and then clean out an infection he suffered after the initial repair.
